Favourite Fictional Couples!

So how could I not mention during the month of February my favourite fictional couples? Not only is it Valentine’s day this week, but also my wedding anniversary! In this blog I’m going to share some awesome fictional couples for you to check out for yourself. Ready?
I’m going to concentrate on two separate couples who come to mind straight away from books I have read multiple times. Then I’ll also share a few more YA couples who tick the boxes when it came to their romance elements.

My two favourite fictional couples are: Cain & Moira, and Derek & Chloe. Cain and Moira are actually from an adult supernatural trilogy by Nora Roberts. Nora Roberts was introduced to me by my mother when I was in year 9 so around the age of 14. I was heavily into books (and surprise, especially anything about the supernatural) but at the time, I didn’t find inspiration from the books I had available. Cue Nora Robert’s supernatural/magical stories!

Can you see how the covers are scratching off?
This particular trilogy, the circle trilogy, features three books: Morrigan’s Cross, Dance of the Gods, Valley of Silence. Valley of Silence, the final book, is Cain and Moira’s story. Just a quick bit of information if you’re unfamiliar with Nora Roberts is that she has a winning formula and I seriously don’t tire of it. Three books. Six people. Three couples. Each book about one couple. Don’t forget that Nora Roberts is an adult romance writer and so there is explicit content.

The circle trilogy is about a group of six fighting to stop Lilith, the world’s oldest and most powerful vampire. She plans on taking over the world, enslaving humans for food and torture. She sounds great, doesn’t she? Hoyt is a 12th century sorcerer sent forward in time by the goddess Morrigan and meets Glenna, a modern day witch. First couple. They meet Blair, a kick-ass vampire hunter and also Larkin, a shapeshifter and nobleman from the past. Second couple. Finally we have Moira, Larkin’s cousin and heir to the Geall Kingdom (where the final battle takes place), and Cain who is not only Hoyt’s twin but also a vampire. Yeah, you heard that right. Some might call her books cliché and filled with tropes. I find her books, at least the structure of it, soothing and enjoy her supernatural elements and storylines.

So, Moira is a little meek and mild to begin with which is clearly a contrast to a very old vampire. Cain is a great mix between still a baddie but also displays good and grows in his character development. I think I love Cain because he never pretends to be something he isn’t and isn’t false. There’s no meeting a girl and then suddenly becoming some different person – although I do think it helps that we have two books of their budding relationship before their own book. I say relationship, they earn each other’s respect and an almost companionship before it builds up at such a delicious pace. Then again, I usually prefer the third couple in Nora Robert’s books probably because there’s been a longer build up to the relationship!

Over the course of the trilogy, Moira transforms into a worthy leader and mentally strong woman – very different to when we first meet her. We also get to peel off Cain’s outer layers as we learn he’s not quite the harsh and uncaring vampire we thought he was. While a Nora Roberts always ends in a happily ever after, theirs was the only relationship that seemed most affected by the storyline; the couple were prepared to put others above themselves and risk their happy ever after. Gosh, it was just the best. I always want to go straight into reading book 3 but then you miss the gorgeous build up to their relationship that should just not be missed.

Dang it, now I need to read these again.
PictureI got book 1 when I was in America aged 11!
My second fictional couple are Derek and Chloe from the Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelly Armstrong. This is a YA story about 15-year-old Chloe sent to a group home for ‘troubled children’ because Chloe claims she can see ghosts. There she meets a sorcerer Simon who struggles with his magic, and his adopted brother Derek who we later learn is a werewolf. Tori is witch with a crush on Simon but doesn’t admit it and Liz becomes Chloe’s friend until she disappears from the group home – until Chloe is suddenly able to see her again. It’s hard to say too much without giving things away but essentially, this group home is not all it’s set out to be especially since the other children all seem to have abilities they are desperately trying to keep hidden from the controlling adults.

I’ll just focus on the romance. At first, Derek is very obsessed with his brother and keeping his brother out of trouble, but poor old Derek has been smacked in the face by puberty (Tori constantly reminding him of his looks). He is big, sweaty, with long lanky greasy hair and has an acne problem. It was actually kind of refreshing to see a character this way! Chloe looks like little girl but is desperate to get others to see her as an adult. She obviously doesn’t get on with Derek at first because he scares her. But an incident seems to set these two on a course for romance when he saves her from something Tori did (she legit probably should have been in a home regardless of her powers but there are reasons behind her behaviour). She begins to realise that he isn’t that scary, just protective (he saves her because Simon likes her and he wants to support Simon) and she helps him as he starts to change (I mean, it’s pretty obvious he’s trying to get through his first shift here without Simon or the group home staff finding out). They bond incredibly over this and he slowly starts to treat her as his ‘pack’. He’s not one to outright admit this but over the course of the books, we see how he starts treating Chloe how he treats Simon which is protective above all else. It’s really stinking sweet and bloody cute.

Up next are a few other fictional couples that once I gave it some thought, I remembered their romance’s and enjoyed them. I feel everyone will know who Katniss and Peeta are from the Hunger Games. The books did a really good job of solidifying their growing relationship – Gale wasn’t much of a love interest in the books! I also want to mention Kate and Tom from the Wereling trilogy by Stephan Cole which is one of my favourite YA werewolf stories! Kate is from a werewolf family but not yet one herself, her family capture Tom and turn him into a werewolf for Kate (I won’t say why because of spoilers) so Kate and Tom run away to see if they can find a way to turn Tom back and to get away from her very crazy family. There’s issues around wolves wanting to take over, purity battles and of course, Tom and Kate trying to stay alive and escape her parents’ evilness. It’s brilliant.

I’m going to leave it there for now as I could probably go on for ever! If you are an adult reader, I do recommend Nora Roberts Circle trilogy just for Cain and Moira’s love story if nothing else (but I’m also a fan of magic and vampires so I did enjoy the story too!). If you love YA then definitely check out the darkest powers trilogy!

Are there any fictional characters you love?
