The answer: Yes and No. Why both? Yes, in that I have been productive and got the first draft of the last book in the Bloodline Alliance trilogy written – something I was pretty sure I would fail to do. The pre-planning was helpful and ensured that on days where I felt a bit ‘meh’ or had some rare spare time, I had an action plan in place.
However, it turns out I’m not great at the major pre-planning that is required. I underestimated on a couple of things and now feel like I am behind at the same time as doing extra things I did not think to plan for. I have to keep reminding myself that this plan is for me and me alone, but I still want to do right by it (I know I sound like a crazy person!).
What I HAVE achieved:
✓ Getting book 2 to betas
✓ Finishing first draft of book 3
✓ Finishing the blurb
✓ Finalising the front cover
✓ Posting more consistently to Instagram (my favourite social media platform at the moment!)
✓ Getting more blogs and videos out
✓ Started planning the next series (as beta stage is longer than planned)
✓ Different blogs/videos to what was planned
What I haven’t been able to do:
Get beta edits done
Plan ahead with Instagram posts
Do more with Instagram stories
Be consistent with blog and video releases (planned for it but kept changing it)
Firstly: getting ahead?! Major lol. I did want to do more with Instagram stories that I’ve seen other authors do but for a variety of reasons, I’m just not there yet. As for the consistent blog and video releases, I think it’s clear I don’t know my ‘area’ yet – I’m still playing around. I also love doing the videos but for some reason, I just can’t do them when my husband is working from home, not only because he is in the office, but I feel too self-conscious. I know, utterly ridiculous right? I don’t feel like I can experiment with different things because he’s around and I can’t film on days when I have my son, so those days are out. I’m not complaining; this is about my own insecurities. I want to experiment and play around with it more though so will have to find times to do this (that I haven’t planned for).
I also wasn’t amazing at sorting out my sticky notes which is a shame because I really enjoy moving them when I’m done (makes me feel like I’m getting somewhere!) but I wrote some out wrong because I’ve tweaked how I’m doing certain projects. In addition, I now have these extra tasks I don’t get to move down. Sad times guys, sad times.
Overall, not too bad then, ey? I certainly feel like I’ve accomplished a lot and I’ve honestly not spent as much time as it might appear! Because I know what I’m doing on any given day (I plan each Sunday for that week from the big overview plan), I get straight to it. Yes, I do plan some things in when I’m with my son but I limit it because I know I only really have his naps in which other things (like the boring adult kind: cleaning, cooking and so on) need to be done too and (of course) he is beginning to drop one nap in the middle of teething . . . I wouldn’t say teething nights are the highlight of any parent’s life!
Will I keep on with the plan? Certainly! I have the full quarter to finish which includes publishing DECEIVED, book 2 in the Bloodline Alliance trilogy. I’ll keep you posted with updates. In the meantime, don’t forget to follow me on Instagram where I’m currently sharing the blurb for book 2 and next week, I’ll be sharing the front cover! Exciting times.
