t1. Not writing related but the biggest news is that we FINALLY (and when I say finally – it took a year, so it deserves the capital letters!) moved house. We moved on a day that reached something like 35 degrees so thank god for removals: they were worth their weight in gold!
Moving incurs a lot of costs, not to mention we’re in a bigger house so now have a bigger mortgage, but having spent lockdown in our old house we knew without a shadow of a doubt we made the right decision. And we love our new house. It still has that weird house smell - you know, the one that isn’t yours – which makes coming back home after being out a weird experience. I’m not going crazy. Houses have smells and I can’t wait for mine to smell like us. Obviously, we smell like roses and sunshine (she says, looking at the dog, and the baby who needs a change). 2. Let’s discuss Camp NaNoWriMo. I’m a very critical person, my own worst enemy and all that jazz so knowing I didn’t hit my goal, even my revised goal, makes me feel bad. BUT, and this is a strong but, I did my best. I still logged 23k words towards finishing the Bloodline Alliance trilogy and I did have to pack up a house and move too. (Some of you may judge that we didn’t pack sooner than the last minute, but we’d been let down multiple times before and weren’t prepared to pack until we had a date. Even then, we only exchanged and completed on the moving day which definitely wasn’t stressful. Nope. Not one teeny tiny little bit.) I spoke to my friend about my feelings of failure who then encouraged me to look at what I had achieved, and I thank her for that. I self-publish so all my deadlines are my own and this same, very wise friend told me I had the power to adjust those deadlines. I think I still have something to prove about being consistent, we all know Aphora took four years to complete so I wanted to have all three books in the Bloodline Alliance trilogy drafted before I released book 1 to prove I could do it. I know. I’m strange. In my head, I’m thinking I need to concentrate on book 1 now most the beta readers have got back to me. Get the covered finished, act on feedback, send to the editor and get it published. Book 2 is back from Alpha readers so I can action that and send to beta readers. Whilst that’s away, I can focus on finishing the draft for book 3. So there is a chance book 3 will be drafted by the time book 2 is released. This is my new goal! 3. What am I reading? Had to add this is as a point because I’m currently reading the final book in The Phoenix Project trilogy by Katherine Macdonald. I was buzzing to read this but had to put it down to move. This is my holiday read now. You should honestly check it out: YA sci-fi set in an apocalyptic world about a genetically engineered superhuman raised to be the perfect soldier who’s trying to fight back against a corrupt government. Plenty of action, romance and witty banter. I’ll leave the UK link to book 1 here. 4. What does August hold? Well, unpacking for starters! We’re also going on holiday, just to a lodge type place in the UK with my husband’s family. It looks beautiful on the photos and will be nice to get away for a few days and spend time with the family. We don’t get to see them often as it is, let alone when you add the pandemic in! I think his dad looking forward to spending some quality time with our son and it’ll be a great chance to relax. Don’t worry, we are following all government guidelines and advice. As I said above, the writing focus is now on book 1, going through beta feedback and then getting the book through edits. I’m actually enjoying this a lot more having been away from it for a while. Some scenes I love so much, I keep pinching myself that I wrote that! As well as editing, I’ll be commissioning the front cover. I’m extremely excited about this because we’ve already been in talks about design! So that’s it folks! August and moving into September are going to be exciting months; you’ll also be hearing from me very soon about the release date for book 1 in the Bloodline Alliance trilogy!
